Specific Gravity – A Factor Worth Determining
Tuesday, October 26th, 2010Science is helping humanity from various ways, it discovered many secret of the universe and help us to understand it. Various inventions in health, technology, and many others sectors are improving our living standard and providing lots of facilities. Earlier people were not able to travel for long distance but now they can visit any place in this world in lesser time. Also in communication sector you can see lots of changes people now have mobile and internet to communicate with their family and friends.
Various inventions help to know universe closely and man have visited the moon and mars now, to know more about the universe. One of the most important factor that ca n computed is specific gravity (relative density). Therefore it is limitless, its definition consists of dividing the density of any unknown material to the density of water kept at 4°C (39° F).
Its discovery is an interesting story, around 250 B.C. the Mathematician of Greek Archimedes asked to determine if the new made crown has pure gold. The king Heiro II of Syracuse provided gold and silver metals to make a crown and he had doubt that the metal smith had added less amount of silver. At the moment Archimedes was unable to give any answer, later one day he noticed that when he entered in the pool water spills over and the volume of water was equal to his body space. Then he applied same technique with crown and find out that the craftsman had been defrauding the King.
At many places the specific gravity is being used and you can’t imagine that. However, its one most common use is to find the relative thickness of egg shell. The thickness of egg determined to identify whether it is good or not for sale. Some people also judge it to determine the health of hen.
It also used in mineral industry, to find out the relative density of these materials. To determine the quality and quantity of the material, it is important to determine the density. At same time it also helps to determine that the material can be extracted or not.
